As a follow-up to the Volvo: The CA DMV indicates I need smog certification to register a change of ownership. Is this a physical piece of paper? I don’t recall getting on when I smogged my 2009 Camry because that was electronically submitted.

Also, can I just smog the car myself if the guy doesn’t have the paper(s) ?

Smog is electronic. Always have the document with you just in case. Smog is required every two years or under change of ownership. If you buy something that wasn’t smogged they can put it in your name but it will show as a “Pending Master File”. Basically it’s yours but requiring more documents to complete the registration. You’ll pay all fees but not get tags or a complete registration card.

Also if you try to smog before you get the pending master file, the smog required is where it was last registered. Example: buy a car from a high smog area (dyno smog) and take to a basic area without doing any paperwork at dmv... you can’t smog in a basic area! It has to go to the dyno unless you put it in your name with the pending file.

I’ve had too many issues at dmv and found out the hard way. Many times.

The car’s smogged with current tags due next year. Do I need to get it smogged again?

If it was smogged in the last 90 days, no. Go to dmv and reg in your name.
